The Foundation for Black Heritage and Culture are inviting area schools to submit individual or group projects that represent their schools’ celebration of Black History Leaders!

The annual Black Heritage Art Student Competition is presented by Black Heritage Fest.   The exhibition, youth performances and reception give local youth a forum to showcase their artistic talents and honor black men and women who have made significant contributions to society and made historical accomplishments from Houston and around the world! Young people, families, community members and others will experience work at the Shrine 10 Bookstore located at 5309 Martin Luther King Blvd. Houston, TX 7702. FREE

Prizes: 1st place- $300  |  2nd place- $200  |  3rd place- $100  |  Honorable Mention- $100  |  People’s Choice Award- $250

The Basics:

Here is the basic, need-to-know information.

  1. Fill out this form and send your submission by February 18.

  2. Representatives from Houston Arts community will judge your work and evaluate it based on these submission guidelines.

  3. Awards will be announced at the showcase on February 26.

  4. Your students’ work will be displayed at the Shrine Cultural Center on Saturday, February 26.

  5. Images of your students’ work may be included in future advertising or media publications to promote the exhibition.

  6. Emphasis is placed on Black History and African Diaspora all around the world.

Accepted Media Includes:

  • Paintings/Drawings/Collage

  • Photography (digital, black & white, color)

  • Audio/Video (animation, documentary, narrative, radio)*

  • Graphic Art (drawing, painting, computer graphics, etc.)

  • 3D (papier-mâché, sculpture, quilting, etc.)

  • Written (poetry, script, spoken word, comedy)

Submission Guidelines:

  • Please submit original work. Five entries per school, please! 

  • Content: All artwork must be made by students in Pre-K to 12th grades and recognize the theme.

  • Quality: Work must have a basic standard of technical proficiency: audio must be loud and clear enough to hear; video must be bright and steady enough to see.  Please do not submit copyrighted materials.

  • Size and Duration Requirements: Entries are not limited in size.  Larger artwork will be displayed only if gallery space permits.

  • Audio/Video: Entries are limited to 8 minutes.  Please submit links to video or audio files or DVDs.

Notification & Prizes:

By March 6, 2022 all award winners will have received notification via email of prizes winnings. After work has been displayed at the Black Heritage Fest, artwork will be returned to participating schools and groups along with winnings.

  • All artists will have the opportunity to present their work on Saturday, February 26 at 2PM.
